OpenAI Temporarily Pauses Pro Subscriptions as Astra Demand Surges
OpenAI has temporarily stopped accepting new subscribers for its $200-per-month Pro plan, as overwhelming demand for its newest AI model, Astra, puts significant pressure on the company's computing infrastructure.
According to LumenCodes, OpenAI product leader Thibault “Tibo” Sottiaux announced the decision on X, explaining that the Pro tier places the greatest load on OpenAI’s systems because of the higher usage limits and access it provides.
“We wanted to take the smallest step that allows us to continue giving the broadest access possible,” Sottiaux said.
The company emphasized that the restriction currently applies only to new Pro subscriptions. Existing Pro customers can continue using the service, while other plans—including Go, Plus, Business, Enterprise, and the API—remain available.
Astra Demand Is Driving the Decision
OpenAI had already warned users that it could temporarily restrict Pro sign-ups if demand for Astra continued growing at its current pace.
Sottiaux described interest in the model as unprecedented, saying the company was using every available option to accommodate the sudden increase in usage. He also stressed that maintaining reliable service for existing customers was the company's priority.
OpenAI has not revealed exactly how many people are attempting to subscribe to Pro each day or how long the suspension will remain in place.
Why Astra Is Creating So Much Demand
Released on September 3, Astra is positioned as OpenAI's most capable model yet. The company has promoted major improvements in reasoning, software development, computer interaction, and complex problem-solving.
The model has been made available across multiple OpenAI subscription tiers, including consumer and business accounts.
OpenAI has also presented Astra as a major milestone in the company's long-term path toward artificial general intelligence, describing its arrival as the beginning of a new phase in AI development.
Those claims have naturally generated considerable attention from developers, businesses, and AI enthusiasts, potentially contributing to the sudden spike in usage.
Infrastructure Becomes the Bottleneck
The situation highlights a growing challenge for AI companies: building a powerful model is only part of the equation. Providing millions of users with access to that model requires enormous amounts of computing power.
More advanced AI models can consume significantly more resources per request, particularly when users take advantage of intensive reasoning, coding, or computer-use capabilities.
OpenAI has previously adjusted usage limits for some of its paid services, including Codex, suggesting that managing compute capacity remains an ongoing challenge as demand grows.
A Temporary Measure
For OpenAI, pausing new Pro subscriptions appears to be a way of controlling demand without restricting access across the entire platform.
Rather than limiting every customer, the company is effectively putting a temporary ceiling on the highest-demand subscription tier while it works to expand or rebalance its infrastructure.
Whether the Pro tier reopens quickly will likely depend on how rapidly OpenAI can increase its available computing capacity—and whether Astra's initial surge in popularity continues.
For now, existing Pro subscribers retain access, while new customers will have to wait before they can purchase OpenAI's highest-priced consumer plan.
