Google Tests Gemini Feature That Can Call Businesses on Your Behalf

Google is expanding Gemini’s capabilities with a new experimental feature called “Call for Me,” allowing the AI assistant to make phone calls to businesses and complete tasks on behalf of users.

The feature follows similar developments from companies such as Meta, whose AI agents can also make calls for users. Google is initially testing the capability with Pixel 11 owners in the U.S. who subscribe to Gemini, along with the beta version of Google’s Phone app for Android.

Gemini Can Handle Calls for Users

“Call for Me” is designed to go beyond simply placing a phone call. Gemini will be able to interact with businesses, provide approved personal information, navigate automated phone systems, and have conversations with employees.

Google says users will also be able to monitor the call while it is happening and take control whenever necessary.

The calls will be made using the user’s own phone number and will be placed directly from the device.

More Than Just Asking About Services

The new feature is intended to handle a range of everyday tasks that would normally require users to spend time on the phone.

For example, Gemini could:

  • Contact a store to check whether an item is in stock.
  • Make a restaurant reservation.
  • Reschedule an existing appointment.
  • Ask a business to place products on hold.
  • Navigate automated phone menus.
  • Wait on hold until a representative becomes available.

This gives Gemini a broader role in handling routine phone-based tasks rather than simply providing information to the user.

Users Can Monitor the Conversation

Google says people won't have to hand complete control of the call over to Gemini.

While the AI is speaking with a business, users can follow the conversation through a live transcript. They can also intervene and take over the call whenever they choose.

The system can introduce itself, work through automated menus, remain on hold, and then communicate with a person once an employee answers.

Building on Google's Earlier AI Calling Experiments

The technology builds on several years of Google's work with AI-assisted phone calls.

At its 2018 I/O developer conference, Google demonstrated Google Assistant calling a salon to make an appointment. The demonstration became notable because the assistant used conversational expressions such as “umm” and “ahh” to make the interaction sound more natural.

Google has continued experimenting with automated calling since then.

From Ask for Me to Call for Me

In 2025, Google introduced “Ask for Me,” which allowed Gemini to contact businesses on a user's behalf to obtain information such as pricing and available services.

Pixel users have also had access to related features including “Hold for Me” and “Talk to a Live Rep.” These tools can navigate automated phone systems and wait for a human representative before notifying the user.

Another feature, “Direct My Call,” displays the options users need to select when navigating interactive voice-response systems.

A More Capable Calling Assistant

“Call for Me” represents a broader version of these earlier capabilities. Instead of simply helping users get through a phone system, Gemini is being designed to carry out complete conversations and tasks.

The ability to share approved personal information could also allow the assistant to perform actions that previously required the user to participate directly.

Google Is Starting With a Limited Test

Google says the feature will initially remain a small-scale experiment because conversations in the real world can be unpredictable and complicated.

The company wants additional time to improve Gemini's ability to handle different conversations and unexpected situations before making “Call for Me” available to a wider audience.

For now, the experiment is limited to eligible Pixel 11 users in the U.S. with a Gemini subscription and access to the beta Android Phone app.
