Duolingo Gives Users a Chance to Restore Lost Learning Streaks

Duolingo is offering a rare second chance to users who have lost long-running learning streaks, introducing a limited-time event that allows eligible learners to recover their progress.

According to LumenCodes, users who previously lost a streak of 30 days or more can restore it by completing three lessons consecutively. The special streak revival event is now rolling out on both iOS and Android devices.

How the Streak Revival Works

Normally, Duolingo users rely on features such as Streak Freeze or Streak Repair to protect their streaks. These tools often require gems, which can be difficult to accumulate or may require purchases when free gems run out.

For June only, Duolingo is removing that barrier for certain users by allowing them to reclaim a previously lost streak without spending gems.

However, there are some limitations:

  • The event is available only during June.
  • Users must have previously lost a streak of at least 30 days.
  • Existing and old streaks cannot be combined.

For example, if someone lost a 1,000-day streak and later built a new 500-day streak, they can recover the original 1,000-day streak, but it will not merge into a 1,500-day streak.

Users who have never lost a streak will not see the event.

Why Duolingo Is Doing This

Duolingo says that many learners lose streaks because of circumstances outside their control, such as travel, illness, work commitments, or personal emergencies. When a long streak suddenly resets to zero, it can feel discouraging enough to make people abandon their language-learning journey altogether.

By allowing users to recover meaningful streaks, the company hopes to reduce that psychological barrier and encourage learners to return to the platform.

The Bigger Picture

Duolingo's success has been built largely on gamification. Streaks, leader boards, achievements, and rewards turn language learning into a daily habit rather than a traditional study routine.

This revival event recognizes an important reality: consistency matters, but occasional setbacks shouldn't necessarily erase years of effort.

For anyone who has been regretting the loss of a long Duolingo streak, June may be the best opportunity yet to bring it back.
