Airbnb Adds AI Search and New Social Features to Transform Travel Discovery

Airbnb is expanding its platform in two major directions: adding more services that could help it compete with traditional hotels, while also using artificial intelligence and social connections to make travel planning easier.

As part of its latest fall product update, the company is introducing additional services, including meal delivery, laundry, baby-equipment rentals, ski and boat rentals in selected markets, and broader grocery delivery.

At the same time, Airbnb is introducing a new AI-powered search experience and expanding the social features that allow travelers to discover destinations through the experiences of friends and other people in their network.

Airbnb Expands Services Beyond Stays

The company has been gradually adding services designed to make its platform useful beyond booking accommodation.

The latest additions build on services introduced last year and include meal delivery, laundry, baby-gear rentals, ski equipment, boat rentals, and expanded grocery delivery.

Some of these services are currently limited to specific locations, but the broader strategy is to give travelers access to more of the services they might otherwise arrange separately through hotels or local providers.

AI Search Comes to Airbnb

The biggest technology-focused addition is a new AI-powered search system.

Airbnb has taken a relatively measured approach to generative AI. CEO Brian Chesky has previously indicated that the company did not want to simply introduce a chatbot-style interface.

Instead, Airbnb is incorporating AI directly into its property discovery experience.

Users can now activate an AI search option and describe what they are looking for using text or voice prompts.

Dynamic Filters Adapt to User Preferences

The search experience is designed to respond to what users are asking for rather than relying exclusively on a fixed set of filters.

For example, if a traveler enters “baby” into the AI search interface, Airbnb can surface related filters such as cribs, playgrounds, and children's books or toys.

This allows the search interface to adjust dynamically based on the traveler's requirements.

AI Can Highlight Property Features

Airbnb is also using AI to identify and surface characteristics of individual properties that may be relevant to travelers.

The technology can help users understand listings more quickly by bringing attention to features that match their search requirements.

The company is also applying AI to wish lists, allowing travelers to compare properties using AI-generated summaries and review information.

Airbnb Wants AI Search to Work at Scale

Chesky described the new system as the beginning of a larger AI search effort rather than a finished product.

The company expects to continue refining the technology over the coming months.

The challenge, according to Chesky, is not simply building an AI-powered search function. Airbnb needs to make sure the technology works effectively within a large e-commerce platform without negatively affecting the booking experience.

Social Features Become Part of Travel Planning

Alongside AI, Airbnb is putting more emphasis on social discovery.

The company wants users to find destinations, accommodations, and activities through their existing connections, potentially encouraging people to travel more often and book additional experiences.

Airbnb began expanding its social features last year by allowing users to connect with friends and fellow travelers on the platform.

The latest update builds further on that system.

Travelers Can Explore Friends' Trips

Users can now view a map showing trips taken by their connections, including previous and upcoming journeys.

When a traveler selects a trip on the map, they can see information about where their connection stayed and which experiences they participated in.

This gives travelers another way to discover destinations based on places their friends have already visited.

Privacy Controls Remain Available

Airbnb is also providing an option for users who do not want their travel history visible to their connections.

Travelers can choose not to share their trips, giving users more control over how their travel activity appears within the platform.

Neighborhood Guides Help Travelers Explore

Airbnb is also developing dedicated pages for neighborhoods.

These pages combine guest reviews and information from other sources to help travelers discover restaurants, activities, and other things to do in a particular area.

The approach expands Airbnb's role from simply helping users find accommodation toward providing more comprehensive destination discovery.

Airbnb Is Combining AI With Human Connections

The company's latest update reflects two different approaches to improving travel discovery.

AI can help travelers search for properties using natural language, dynamically refine results, and compare listings. Social features, meanwhile, allow people to discover destinations through the experiences of friends and other travelers.

Together with its expanding range of travel services, Airbnb is building a platform that extends beyond accommodation bookings into broader trip planning and experiences.
